Health Care

These days regulatory compliance plays a large part in an organization’s decisions about technology. Organizations must take into account compliance with the Health Insurance portability and Privacy Act (HIPAA) of 1996. The HIPAA Privacy Rule provides federal protections for personal health information while remaining balanced so that it permits the disclosure of personal health information needed for patient care and other important purposes.

The Security Rule has specifications a series of administrative, physical, and technical safeguards for covered entities to use to assure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of electronic protected health information.

Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and Electronic Health Records (EHR) are required to have what is called "meaningful use certification". As part of The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) also known as the stimulus bill, hospitals and physicians can begin to receive financial incentives based on their use of Electronic Health Records (EHRs), but only if they can demonstrate to be "meaningful users" themselves.

Eligible professionals and hospitals who seek to qualify for incentive payments under the Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs are required by statute to use Certified EHR Technology and must demonstrate use of a qualified EHR in a meaningful manner. In 2011, this would include, for example: improving quality, safety and efficiency and reducing healthcare disparities, engaging patients and families, coordination care and maintaining privacy and security of systems and data.

BBDS can offer DocuWare, Integrated Document Management specialist, has received a new certification that helps health care providers and hospitals obtain financial incentives. As of April 1, 2011 DocuWare is the only Integrated Document Management system certified under the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT®) for "meaningful use" for In-Patient Discharge Instructions (Module - 170.306.e, v1.1). This certification validates DocuWare as a leader in the health care market and, at the same time, focuses the attention of hospital executives on the need to create a long term document management strategy for their facility." T homas Schneck, President of DocuWare AG.

BBDS can also offer solutions to work with your current EMR or EHR to eliminate the costs of pre-printed forms and labels by recreating those forms and printing them with a barcode or making them available on a tablet as a paperless solution. Instead of patients coming in and handwriting redundant information, they are presented with first generation forms with patient database information neatly typed on them. The patient simply updates the form and signs. The physician can write on the encounter form as needed and when all the forms are returned they are scanned in, the barcodes are read and they are filed with the chart. This barcode also serves as a unique identifier, eliminating the confusion between John Smith and John J. Smith.

The forms can also be a paperless solution. The forms for each patient would be available on a device, filled out on the device and then submitted via the device directly to the system. This would speed up medical billing and speed up the collection process. Improved patient care and employee productivity are also a benefit.
